Foods to Avoid with Arthritis

Arthritis pain and symptoms such as swelling, stiffness and decreased range of motion, affect an estimated 54 million adults have doctor-diagnosed arthritis, according to the ​Arthritis Foundation.​Nearly 300,000 babies and children have arthritis or a rheumatic condition. And osteoarthritis, which is the most common form of the disease, affects an estimated 31 million Americans.

The statistics are staggering, and there is still no cure for this autoimmune disease. However, great strides have been made in the treatment of symptoms, particularly reducing inflammation. Many of the strides made have included a shift in diet, avoiding certain foods like the ones listed below.

1. Fried foods

Fried chicken, french fries, doughnuts are all foods that should be avoided of at the very least, be eaten sparingly by everyone. Individuals with arthritis, however, should avoid them entirely.

Fried foods are high in fats, particularly saturated and trans fats that can lead to obesity, which can in turn put wear and tear on the joints. And all that excess fat can produce hormones that can ​increase inflammation​.

So, if you like the crispy, salty texture, perhaps bake up your own fries sprinkled with a little sea salt and paprika. It really doesn’t take long, and it’s much better for you.
